Washington Laws Concerning Abortion Data:
The information contained in this section includes detailed tables on
pregnancies and induced abortions for the most recent complete calendar year.
Every year the Department of Health collects data from abortion providers across the
state of Washington using the abortion reporting system. Data from
Certificates of Live Birth and Certificates of Fetal Death are also
used to prepare this report.
Under the authority of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC 246-490-100),
The Department of Health collects and utilizes health-related data to
promote and assess the quality and accessibility of health care throughout
the state. Specified, non-identified information about the patient must
be reported to the Department of Health. In addition, information about
abortions performed in other states and in Canada for women who are
residents of Washington State is obtained through voluntary cooperative
arrangements between vital records offices in most states and Canadian provinces.
As a result of this effort, the data collected can be used to help address
issues related to family planning, maternal and child health, and access
to health care. Induced abortion data help planners decide if safe and
adequate care is being provided to women obtaining abortions in Washington State.
For information regarding Washington State laws and abortion data
see the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and the Washington
Administrative Code (WAC).
