Welcome to the home page of the Hospital and Patient Data Section
(HPDS) of the Center
for Health Statistics. HPDS collects and publishes critical
information that helps Washingtonians live healthier lives.
By providing current, high quality health data about community
hospitals in Washington State, CHS\HPDS helps people to make better-informed
decisions about healthcare and health plans. These data are also used by policy
makers, health professionals, community-based organizations, and researchers to
understand trends, identify high risk populations (and geographic areas), set
prevention priorities, and plan targeted health promotion strategies.
We have grouped our data into several sections as shown on
the far left: Patient Information has data about hospital
inpatients including charity care, Hospital Discharge Data
has information about hospital census and charges by various
categories, Hospital Financial has information on hospital
financials and utilization, CHARS UB-04 has information on
the current CHARS data file layout, and CHARS 887I 5010
Project has information on the expansion of CHARS to allow
data submission in the 5010 file format, including
submission of ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure coding.
Data sets at CHS\HPDS include the Comprehensive Hospital
Abstract Reporting System (CHARS), the inpatient discharge
database that describes each individual patient’s hospital
stay; and the hospital financial database (FIN) that
describes the year-to-year audited financial and utilization
history of and un-audited quarter to quarter financial and
utilization history of the hospitals in Washington.Data are distributed as raw data sets, statistical tabulations, web pages and
through printed reports, including
Washington State Charity Care in
Washington Hospitals. We at the Center for Health Statistics are proud of the
effort put into capturing, analyzing and providing quality data. Please explore
these pages and let us know what works, or doesn't work, for you.
