What is the Washington Comprehensive Cancer Control Partnership?
The
Washington Comprehensive Cancer Control Partnership is a diverse group of
organizations and individuals representing many key stakeholders in
cancer prevention and control in Washington. The Partnership is staffed and funded by the Washington State
Department of Health through a federal grant from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
What is
the purpose of the Partnership?
The Partnership is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation
and evaluation of the Washington State
Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan. (PDF, 1.5MB)
Our
vision for Washington State is a place where:

Individuals
will not get preventable cancer

Those
individuals with detectable cancers are diagnosed in the earliest stage of
the disease

Those
individuals with treatable cancers are given the highest quality
state-of-the-art care necessary to assure their survival and quality of
life
-
Those
individuals in the end stages of incurable cancers are cared for in a way
that maximizes the quality of their life and death
-
Full
support is given to research directed toward understanding the causes of
cancers and toward improving prevention, early detection, treatment, and
palliation
Our
mission is to:

Reduce
cancer incidence and mortality

Increase
equity in access to appropriate preventative, diagnostic, medical, and
palliative care

Maximize
the quality of life for individuals with cancer

Promote
research

Educate
consumers, providers, payers, and policy makers on cancer issues
How is the Partnership
organized?
The organizational structure of the Partnership
includes a Steering Committee, four Operational
Committees, and three Plan Implementation Committees. The Operational
Committees are responsible for the ongoing administrative and
operational activities of the Partnership and include Membership,
Communications, Evaluation, and Policy and Legislation committees. The
Plan Implementation Committees are responsible for activities that
address priority goals and objective within the
Washington State Comprehensive Cancer
Control Plan.
What has
been accomplished so far?
2001
-
•Initial
planning meetings held to discuss a comprehensive approach
in Washington State.

•Washington
State Department of Health awarded a grant from Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop a state
comprehensive cancer control plan.
2002
2003
-
•Washington
State Department of Health awarded a grant from CDC to
transition from planning to implementation.
-
CDC also awarded grants to implement two specific plan
priorities:
colorectal and prostate cancer.

Next steps?
The Washington State Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan…
The Plan includes goals, objectives, and strategies for dealing with
the broad spectrum of cancer issues in Washington. The Plan itself is an
end product of the planning process; however, it is just an initial step in a longer,
sustained, comprehensive cancer control process.
Implementation…
The Plan itself cannot affect the number of new cancer cases or deaths in
Washington. Strategies must be implemented to achieve Plan goals and
objectives. Implementation will require a coordinated and integrated
approach from many partners. Implementation funding from CDC is sufficient to
sustain the ongoing operation of the Partnership. The Partnership is
responsible for providing or generating implementation of Plan strategies.
Long-term outcomes...
Implementation of effective strategies will lead to systematic,
environmental, and behavioral changes that impact cancer. These changes
should ultimately result in long-term outcomes including decreased cancer
incidence, morbidity and mortality, and improved quality of life.
