Community Prevention Grants

The Washington State Department of Health is providing Preventive Health and Health Services (PHHS) Block Grant funding to local health jurisdictions and tribes to address policies that promote physical activity and healthy eating. Funds are awarded for up to three years for up to $50,000 per year. The successful applicants for 2008-2010 are described below. Another competitive bidding process will be held again in 2010 if the funding remains stable.

  • Cowlitz County Health Department
    Facilitate the activities of the "Cowlitz on the Move" coalition, including mobilizing the community to develop the Castle Rock-Lexington Trail and forming a food policy council to make healthy foods more widely available.
     
  • Island County Public Health
    Address school policies that support healthy food choices and increased physical activity for children and youth.
     
  • Lummi Nation
    Increase pedestrian safety and the walkability of the community by developing partnerships, advocating for safe streets and raising awareness of the importance of self-protection.
     
  • Public Health - Seattle & King County
    Conduct a public education campaign to support the King County Board of Health policy requiring nutrient menu labeling for all chain food establishments.
     
  • Skagit County Public Health Department
    Coordinate the Skagit County Healthy Communities Project to address school policies that support healthy food choices and increased physical activity for children and youth. Also increase the availability of sidewalks, trails and bike lanes.
     
  • Snohomish Health District
    Increase the capacity of Marysville, Lynnwood and Everett to assess comprehensive plans and to develop model zoning and land use policies that support active community environments.
     
  • Spokane Regional Health District
    Develop a City of Spokane Pedestrian Plan to increase opportunities for people to be physically active in their daily lives.
     
  • Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department
    Increase the availability of sidewalks, trails and bike lanes through the development of a City of Tacoma non-motorized transportation plan.
     
  • Yakima Health District
    Influence school policies to support physical activity and nutrition resources for families.
