What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorders are
a group of developmental disabilities that
can cause significant challenges in
communication, behavior and social
interactions. Typically appearing within
the first three years of life, autism
affects each individual differently. Early screening,
diagnosis, and services are essential to
get the best results for children with
autism.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that on average 1 in every 110 children has an autism spectrum disorder.
- It is estimated that 8,000 to 12,000 children in Washington State have some form of autism.
Washington State's Autism Project focuses on:
- Spreading awareness about the importance of early screening and identification of autism and other developmental delays.
- Teaching providers about diagnosis and treatment.
- Improving service systems in Washington State for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families.
