What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorders are a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant challenges in communication, behavior and social interactions. Typically appearing within the first three years of life, autism affects each individual differently. Early screening, diagnosis, and services are essential to get the best results for children with autism.

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that on average 1 in every 110 children has an autism spectrum disorder.
  • It is estimated that 8,000 to 12,000 children in Washington State have some form of autism.

Washington State's Autism Project focuses on:

  • Spreading awareness about the importance of early screening and identification of autism and other developmental delays.
  • Teaching providers about diagnosis and treatment.
  • Improving service systems in Washington State for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families.
