Title V Block Grant

Since 1935, the federal government has given money to states to support activities to improve the health of women, infants, children, adolescents, and their families. The money is given in the form of a block grant. States are required to match every four federal dollars with three state dollars. Block grant funds support state and local activities related to maternal and child health.

To receive the block grant, each year the Office of Maternal and Child Health must submit an application and report to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Maternal and Child Health Bureau. The application includes data on several national and state performance measures, a budget summary, and a report on past, present, and planned activities. Every five years, the application also includes a comprehensive needs assessment along with a set of priorities for the next five years. The Office of Maternal and Child Health conducted a needs assessment in 2005. The results of the 2005 Needs Assessment are available below.

Public Review and Comment

The Washington State Department of Health Office of Maternal and Child Health (OMCH) 2009 Title V Block Grant Application and 2007 Annual Report public comment period is closed. The final application and annual report will be available at this site after it is submitted to the Maternal and Child Health Bureau in September.

Because of the timing of the review period, it might not be feasible to implement or reflect all comments in this year’s application (e.g. those related to the scope, direction, or intent of priorities or activities). We appreciate the comments that were received. They will be considered for future applications, if not for the current application.
