Promoting an Enhanced and Brighter Future in Washington State Early Childhood Care and Education Programs

Purpose

Determine if Bright Futures principles and materials help to enhance outcomes of existing health promotion systems for children and their families enrolled in Washington State early childhood care and education programs.

How

The project will use Bright Futures (BF) as the core foundation to build on established health systems in selected programs representing Head Start, Early Head Start, Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP), and childcare. This project will:

  • Conduct interviews with staff in early childhood programs that are successfully using Bright Futures materials.
  • Reinforce child health as a key component for school readiness.
  • Recruit early childhood program sites (Head Start, Early Head Start, ECEAP, and childcare) to pilot enhancements to their existing health promotion systems.
  • Design a Bright Futures training curriculum and training modalities for the staff in the pilot childhood program sites. Provide ongoing technical support and assistance.
  • Adapt and create culturally competent health promotion materials for families.
  • Develop a curriculum for the pilot site to train parents in the use of the Bright Futures Health Organizer and other health promotion materials.
  • Evaluate, analyze and report project outcomes.
  • Identify recommendations for replication of the project in Washington State and elsewhere.

What

Expected project outcomes are:

  1. Early childhood programs improve in meeting required health standards i.e., number of children having an identified primary health care provider and receiving health screens.
  2. Early childhood providers demonstrate enhanced knowledge, skill, and confidence in health promotion practices for children and families.
  3. Families demonstrate enhanced knowledge, skill, and confidence in health promotion practices for their children.
