Medical Provider and Health Care
Professional Publications: (PDF, 525KB) Maternal and Infant Health has
several newly revised best practice documents for professionals caring
for pregnant women. This flyer describes these documents and
provides links to additional resources, fact sheets, and other
information by browsing by topic.
Breastfeeding:
Maternal and Infant Health promotes breastfeeding through work with
First
Steps agencies (Maternity Support Services and Infant Case
Management), the Women, Infants, and Children Supplemental Nutrition
Program (WIC), Within Reach, and the
Breastfeeding
Infant Friendly Workplace Promotion.
Regional
Perinatal Programs: Maternal, Infant, Child and Adolescent Health
manages contracts with four regional perinatal centers in Washington
State to
coordinate and implement state and regional quality improvements
projects to decrease poor pregnancy outcomes for which Medicaid clients
are at disproportionately increased risk.
Domestic Violence: Maternal and Infant Health promotes universal
screening for domestic violence in each trimester and postpartum.
We offer resources for providers to use in working with patients
experiencing domestic violence, including information on screening and a
resource fact sheet. You can view these

Domestic Violence and Pregnancy: Guidelines for Screening
and Referral
The best practice guide includes information about the benefits of universal screening for domestic violence
during pregnancy, sample questions and statements to assist in starting
the conversation in a safe and comfortable way, what to do when violence
is disclosed, and information on safety planning.If you have experienced domestic violence and need help, call the
Washington State Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-562-6025.
HIV:
Maternal, Infant, Child and Adolescent Health
works with the Department of Health HIV Program to reduce perinatal HIV
transmission through reduction of HIV infection in women.
Substance Abuse During
Pregnancy: Maternal, Infant, Child and Adolescent Health provides prenatal provider substance abuse screening
tools so that more women with abuse patterns are identified and engaged in
treatment.
Tobacco: Maternal, Infant,
Child and Adolescent Health works with
Tobacco Prevention and
Control Program and other experts to address smoking during
pregnancy and second hand smoke.
On July 1, 2008, the Department of Social and Health Services
medical programs' coverage expanded to include a smoking
cessation benefit for clients. This benefit includes free
counseling and in some cases free prescription drugs. For more

Maternal, Infant,
Child and Adolescent Health and Tobacco Prevention and Control Program in
collaboration with Department of Social and Health Services, the statewide Perinatal
Advisory Committee, and other heath care professionals developed a best
practice booklet for prenatal care providers.
Smoking
Cessation During Pregnancy: Guidelines for Intervention includes
information on using motivational interviewing techniques, tips for
dealing with relapse, developing quit plans, expanded pharmacotherapy
information, and additional resources.
Maternity
Support Services:
This is the enhanced services component of the statewide
First Steps Program.
The goal of First Steps is to improve pregnancy and parenting outcomes.
As of March 1, 2011, the Department of Health no longer assists with
Maternity Support Services (MSS) to First Steps providers. Please
see the
Department of
Social and Health Services website for current information on MSS
and First Steps.
Pregnancy Weight Gain: Maternal Infant Child and Adolescent
Health developed the “Healthy Weight
Gain During Pregnancy: a Clinician’s Tool” to support providers
in the screening, assessing and promoting a healthy weight gain among
pregnant women. We also developed the “Healthy Weight Gain During Pregnancy” handout for pregnant women to help women gain appropriate weight amount during pregnancy. This sheet contains tips for good nutrition and physical activity, space for goal setting and web resources. The sheet is available in Spanish and English. We also promote healthy pregnancies and weight gain
through the
First Steps program (Maternity Support Services and Infant Case Management), Women, Infants, and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program
(WIC) and the
Parent Help 123 website.
Family
Planning:
Maternal, Infant, Child and Adolescent Health/Maternity Support Services works
collaboratively with
Family
Planning and Reproductive Health Program within the Department of
Health and the Department of Social and Health
Services to provide updates to First Step providers and other health care providers
in Washington State.
The University of Washington School of Nursing provides research
based training and support to the maternal child health work force in
both the private and public sector. See

Perinatal
Advisory Committee: The Perinatal Advisory Committee is staffed by
the Maternal
and Infant Health Program and brings together representatives
from the four regional perinatal programs, professional organizations,
consumer groups, and state agencies to review and assess perinatal
health issues. This group also assists in developing policies and
practices to improve perinatal outcomes.
Women,
Infants, and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC): The
Women, Infants, and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program
serves pregnant women and children up to age five. Their program is co-located
with many First Steps agencies. For more information, call

Infectious Disease and Reproductive Health: Maternal, Infant,
Child and Adolescent Health works closely with the
HIV and the Family Planning Reproductive Health Programs within the
Office of Infectious Disease Reproductive Health at the Department of
Health. Collaborative activities are focused on reducing HIV and
unintended pregnancy, and promoting preconception care.
Local
Health Departments:
Maternal, Infant, Child and Adolescent Health Program staff work closely with local health departments to oversee
contract activities and provide consultation and technical assistance
when needed.
Health and Recovery Services Administration: This administration was formerly known as the Medical Assistance
Administration Health and Recovery Services Administration
is within the Department of Social and Health Services. They also administer
the
First Steps Medicaid Program, including Maternity Support Services and
Infant Case management. The Department of Health Maternal, Infant,
Child and Adolescent Health Program assists in administering these programs through an
interagency agreement. Health and Recovery Services Administration
supports additional programs in partnership with Maternal, Infant, Child
and Adolescent Health, including WithinReach, Tobacco Quit Line, and the Perinatal
Regional Programs.
