New Vaccine Advisory Committee recommendations and guidance for
meningococcal conjugate vaccine
At its quarterly meeting on April 21, 2011, the Vaccine Advisory Committee
unanimously voted to recommend full acceptance of the Advisory Committee for
Immunization Practices’ recommendations for use of meningococcal conjugate
vaccines as published on January 28, 2011, in the
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. In general, the new
recommendations call for a booster dose at age 16 years. A booster dose is not
required if the first dose is given after the patient’s 16th birthday.
The committee recognizes that creating opportunities to vaccinate adolescents is
more challenging than younger kids and infants. The committee has also included
clinical-level guidance to providers regarding this issue.
