Radiological Emergency Preparedness

In the event of a radiological emergency, the Radiological Emergency Preparedness (REP) Section guides the Department's response by coordinating all actions taken to protect the public from radiation exposure.  Staff Health Physicists and Nuclear Engineers maintain readiness through ongoing training and drills and written plans and procedures.  REP maintains a 24-hour nuclear emergency telephone line (206-NUCLEAR) to ensure that emergency response is activated promptly at the initial notification.  They, along with state and local emergency response partners, ensure that, if an emergency occurs, actions to protect the public are taken promptly.

Plans and Procedures

The REP section maintains the plans and procedures for the Department's response to all radiological emergencies. For emergencies involving facilities that maintain a large inventory of radiological materials and have an established radiological emergency response plan (FNFs or Fixed Nuclear Facilities), the department uses its Radiological Emergency Response Plan and Procedures manual. For all other incidents including weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), the department uses its WMD/Non-FNF Incident Response Plan and Procedures manual.

Training

The REP section provides training to first responders and any agency who may respond to emergencies potentially involving radioactive materials.  REP has an outreach program to provide "Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness Training," "Radiation Basics," and instrument use to local public health and medical facility staff, law enforcement, fire fighters, emergency medical technicians, and other first responders.

If interested in receiving training from the Department of Health please contact Al Conklin or phone 360-236-3261.
