Statewide Mercury Advisories for Fish
Important advice for women who are or might become pregnant, nursing moms, and children.

 

 

 

Store-Bought / Commercial Fish Advice

Don't eat Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel, Tilefish, or Tuna Steaks (Bluefin, Bigeye, Yellowfin).

Tuna - Choose light over white! Canned light tuna has less mercury than canned white (albacore) tuna.

Canned Chunk Light Tuna*   Canned White (Albacore) Tuna*
  • Women of childbearing age should eat no more than 2 cans of canned chunk light tuna per week.  

  • Children under 6 years can eat half a can (3 ounces) of chunk light tuna per week, plus another fish meal low in mercury that week such as catfish, cod, flounder, pollock, salmon, shrimp, and trout.

 
  • Women of childbearing age should eat no more than 1 can of canned white (albacore) tuna per week.

  • Children under 6 should eat less than half a can (3 ounces) of canned white (albacore) tuna per week. If your child has eaten canned white (albacore) tuna, your child should not eat any other fish that week. 

*The amount of fish you should eat is based on your body weight, see our fish meal size chart.

Sport-Caught / Recreational Fish Advice

Women who are or might become pregnant, nursing mothers, and young children:

  • Don't eat Northern Pikeminnow.

  • Limit eating Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass to no more than 2 meals per month.
