Imported Measles in Holiday Traveler (posted 1/11/06)

Serologic testing done on January 10th at Washington State Public Health Laboratories has confirmed measles in an adult Snohomish County resident hospitalized in King County.  A potential for public exposures at SeaTac Airport on January 6 between 10 a.m. and 12 noon has been identified.

The person with measles, along with several friends, traveled to Thailand on December 16th and returned through SeaTac airport, arriving around 10 am on January 6th on an Asiana Air, flight 272 from Korea.  The person was ill (fever) during the flight back to the USA, developed a rash on January 8, and  presented to the emergency room the afternoon of January 9th with fever, rash, cough, and conjunctivitis; the person was admitted and remains hospitalized the morning of January 11. Hospital infection control is aware of the situation and has assessed potential exposures to employees.

Snohomish and King County communicable disease epidemiology sections have identified exposed personal contacts and have also interviewed the individuals who traveled from Thailand with the case. There was some possibility for exposure at a King County medical facility the afternoon of January 9.  However, the risk in the hospital setting was reduced by the case having had a mask in place upon arrival at the facility.  CDC Division of Global Migration and Quarantine has been notified of the potential for measles exposures during air travel and persons that were identified as being at increased risk for exposure during the flight are being contacted by their local health jurisdictions.

A collaborative press release from Snohomish Health District and Public Health – Seattle & King County was made on January 10.  Further information is available at these links:
