2011 Rabies Activity in WashingtonThe primary reservoir of rabies in the Northwest is bats. Rabid bats have been found in almost every county in Washington. Between 5-10% of bats submitted for testing are found to be rabid. This is a skewed population of sick and injured bats; less than 1% of healthy bats are infected with rabies. In 2011, a total of 11 rabid bats were identified in Washington State, including two in Thurston County and one each in Chelan, Clallam, Island, King, Lewis, Pierce, Snohomish, Walla Walla, and Whatcom counties. In 2010, 14 rabid bats were identified in Washington State, one each in Asotin, Clark, Cowlitz, Ferry, Kitsap, Kittitas, and Pierce Counties; two each in King and Thurston Counties; and three in Snohomish County. Prevent rabies by vaccinating pets (now required for dogs, cats and ferrets in Washington). Avoid feeding and having contact with wildlife. It is very important to thoroughly wash wounds from animal bites and safely capture any bat that has had contact with a person. Call your local health department with questions.
