Serology

All serology tests require prior approval by Epidemiology.  Testing of serum (or limited testing of CSF) by enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) detects IgA, IgM, and IgG antibodies to determine recent infection.   The PHL performs ELISA only on people who are sick.  Collect blood in a red top or red-gray top tube at the following times: measles, 3 days post onset of rash; rubella, 5 days post onset of rash; SARS, 21 days or more post onset of symptoms; West Nile and SLE, 8 days post onset of symptoms.  When blood is drawn before  these times, a second draw is sometimes needed to verify the results.  For SARS testing, other specimens can be collected at earlier times as specified by Epidemiology
