Glassware and Media Preparation

Glassware

The Public Health Laboratory’s Glassware section prides itself on providing the various laboratories with clean, serviceable glassware, and pipettes in a timely manner.  Glassware is used by microbiologists and chemists  throughout the laboratory and it is critical that materials are sterilized for use in routine testing.  The Glassware section ensures that all materials are cleaned, sorted, and in proper working condition for the various laboratories.

Media Preparation

The Media Preparation section manufactures and prepares more than 300 different types of media and buffers for use in the Microbiology department, Mycobacteriology department, and the Food and Water sections of the Environmental Laboratory Sciences.

The preparation of growth sustainable media requires the careful combination of ingredients, attaining the proper pH, skillfully dispensing the media, and passing stringent quality assurance testing.  Once the media has been prepared and accepted by the laboratory the media has a limited shelf life and must be used or discarded.  Accordingly, the media department produces a large number of media’s per week, each prepared to the same exacting standards.
