The Public Health Laboratories mailroom receives specimens and samples from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.   Saturday deliveries can be accepted by prior arrangement.  The mailroom staff provides services in the receiving area such as distribution, collection-kit preparation and shipping, glassware, and dishwashing.

As part of the receiving department, mailroom staff process specimens and samples coming into the Public Health labs and distributes them to the appropriate laboratory for testing.  The mailroom also processes orders for specimen kits from hospitals, clinics, and health departments across Washington State.  Some of the specimen kits that are sent out include:

  • B. Pertussis
  • Chlamydia
  • Mycobacteriology (TB)
  • Virology influenza
  • Enteric Bacteriology
  • Ova and Parasites
  • Rabies

A description of many of the kits and collection techniques used to collect specimens is at  http://www.doh.wa.gov/EHSPHL/PHL/Brochures/brochures.htm.

In addition to the kits, supplies such as forms, Biohazard bags, and mailing containers are sent out to ensure safe shipments of the specimens and samples to the Public Health Laboratories.  The mailroom is also responsible for the shipping of packages and postal mail via UPS, FedEx and USPS.

Information on shipping and packaging of clinical specimens and samples for submission to the PHL can be found at http://www.doh.wa.gov/EHSPHL/PHL/packaging.htm .   For more information on ordering kits or for general information regarding the shipping rules and regulations e-mail the Mailroom at  PHL.Mailroom@doh.wa.gov or call (206) 418-5579.
