Risk and Safety
Assessment
At the request of the
Legislature and the local community, the Public Health
Laboratory (PHL), located in the City of Shoreline,
has completed a Risk and Safety
Assessment of its operations.
The Laboratory hired
an independent consulting firm, Kleinfelder, to conduct the
Assessment from July through December, 2008. Although the Laboratory is
inspected and certified each year by several
local and federal agencies and organizations,
this independent assessment process provided a
unique opportunity for the greater Shoreline
community to learn more about the Laboratory and
its operations.
Included in the Risk
and Safety Assessment are:
-
An analysis of the
materials used and the types of tests
performed at the Laboratory and a look at
the physical features of the building as
they pertain to safety.
-
An evaluation of
Laboratory safety in the community.
-
An evaluation and
series of recommendations related to
emergency procedures in place at the
Laboratory. This included an evaluation
of the types of procedures used internally
at the Laboratory during an emergency, as
well as an evaluation of those procedures used in case of
a wider emergency affecting the surrounding
area.
The PHL
hosted a community meeting on November 6, 2008,
from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The meeting
was held at the Laboratory to help us gather
community feedback on the draft report that had
been presented in late October. A comment
period was extended through November 11th and
Kleinfelder incorporated stakeholder and
community feedback into the final report.
Work on the Risk and
Safety Assessment was completed and a final
report was issued on November 21, 2008. A
final copy of the report is posted here for your
information: Risk and Safety Assessment
Report.
