Health Information Exchange (HIE)

In December 2010, the Office of the National Coordination (ONC) for Health Information Technology approved the plan and awarded Washington $11.3 million to start the implementation phase of a state wide Health Information Exchange (HIE) system.

Governor Gregoire designated the Health Care Authority Washington’s lead agency for this implementation.  The Health Care Authority along with HIE Lead Organization OneHealthPort (OHP) have developed the HIE strategic and operational plans to ensure Washington State's plans meet ONC’s governance, financial, technical, operational and policy requirements.

OneHealthPort has been moving forward with implementation of Washington’s HIE system to be a low cost, accessible and secure health information exchange system.  The HIE system will improve patient outcomes and reduce cost because of its ability to easily share health information between and among health organizations and patient’s information will no longer be fragmented.

OneHealthPort has contracted to build the HIE system; there is a very aggressive timeline to stand up this system by the second quarter of 2011.  OneHealthPort continues to make progress towards operations and policy such as qualifiers, subscription rates, Service Level Agreements, etc with a go live date of 2nd quarter 2011.
