Meaningful Use of Electronic Heath
Records (EHR).
The American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act including the Health Information
Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act
provides incentives to accelerate the adoption of Health
information technology via Medicaid and Medicare incentives to
those eligible hospitals and eligible providers. “Meaningful
use” is defined in a very specific way for health care
professionals and hospitals, and certain core and menu set
criteria must be met to receive payment.
There are 24-25 criteria for meaningful use. Three of them specifically require reporting to
public health:
- Submit electronic data to
Child Profile Immunization Registry
- Provide electronic syndromic
surveillance data to public health agencies
- Provide electronic submission of
reportable lab results to public health agencies
