Independent Review Organizations (IROs)
Under RCW 48.43.535 and RCW 43.70.235, consumers who have been denied coverage or payment by their health insurance carrier have a right to an impartial, external review of their case. If upon completion of the carrier's appeal process, a consumer is not satisfied with the carrier's decision, the consumer can request review by a certified IRO.
The Office of the Insurance Commissioner regulates carriers, and has established a
rotational registry carriers must follow when assigning IRO reviews.
