Heat wave has increased air pollution and may affect health The combination of hot sunny weather and stagnant air is causing increased levels of ozone and fine particles in much of Washington, especially Western Washington. Both ozone and particulate matter are breathed into all parts of the lung. Ozone can irritate and inflame the breathing passages in the lungs, throat, nose, and sinuses. Ozone levels are highest outdoors, especially during the heat of the day. Fine particles can worsen or cause respiratory (asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD) or cardiovascular (heart disease and stroke) problems. Air pollution is a particular concern for the young, the elderly, pregnant women, smokers and those with respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. People who are sensitive to air pollution must be especially careful to limit their time outdoors when air quality is poor. Healthy people can also be affected by poor air quality and should try to avoid prolonged exercise or strenuous physical activity outdoors during hot days with stagnant air. Additional links:
