State Department of Health and local authorities close a Hoodsport inn
OLYMPIA ¾ The Washington State Department of Health Facilities and Services Licensing program has suspended the license of the Divers Inn in Hoodsport and ordered the inn to stop renting rooms immediately.
Mason County notified the department that the Inn’s water and septic system were not approved for volumes that occur with commercial use. The county confirmed that the water supply and on-site septic system were only approved for residential use not to exceed 10 persons.
Commercial use requirements are needed because of the increased sewage flows and water demand associated with higher volume use. These requirements are intended to prevent a septic system failure and potential subsequent fecal contamination of nearby wells and surface water. Mason County posted the inn with "Do Not Occupy" notices to prevent any commercial type of activity.
Under the Department of Health action, called a summary suspension, Divers Inn has 20 days to request a hearing to contest the immediate closure order. Meanwhile, all guests have vacated the inn and Divers Inn is required to stop renting rooms.
The responsibilities of the Facilities and Services Licensing program of the Department of Health include licensing more than 1,700 motels, hotels, resorts, and bed-and-breakfasts in the state, and enforcing health and safety standards for those establishments.
