YMCA announces boil water advisory at Camp Seymour in Pierce County
Gig Harbor ¾ YMCA’s Camp Seymour in Pierce County has advised all campers and staff to not consume the tap water at the camp after a recent sample showed the presence of fecal coliform bacteria. Bottled water has been provided for drinking and boiled water is being used for food preparation.
The Washington State Department of Health has been notified. Camp Seymour is working closely with its water system manager — Peninsula Light Company — and with the Division of Drinking Water and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department to inform campers, parents, and staff of the advisory and to take precautions to protect their health.
"Keeping our campers and staff healthy while at camp is our top priority. We are doing all we can to eliminate the bacteria from the water system and restore safe and reliable drinking water to the camp," said Michael Ketcham, Executive Director of Camp Seymour.
The water system has been inspected and disinfected. There have been no reported illnesses related to the camp’s drinking water. If parents observe any symptoms of illness in children that attended the camp, they are encouraged to consult their physician. Additional health information may be available from the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department at 253-798-6410.
Follow-up water samples will be tested for bacteria this week. The advisory will remain in effect until Camp Seymour and state and local health officials are confident there is no longer a risk of illness to the campers. Once satisfactory results are reported, campers and staff will be notified that the advisory has been lifted.
Camp Seymour is host to about 150 campers and staff and is owned and operated by the YMCA of Tacoma-Pierce County. The Executive Director of the Camp, Michael Ketcham can be contacted at 253-460-8900. Russ Salzer, the Director of Operations for the Peninsula Light Company, can be reached at 253-857-1554.
