Physician involved in Tri-Cities adverse event surrenders license
OLYMPIA ¾ A physician whose license was suspended on charges of substandard care that left a Richland woman in a vegetative state will permanently surrender his license. The Medical Quality Assurance Commission and the Department of Health have reached the agreement with Robert L. Berry, M.D., (MD00040586). At the time of the incident, Berry was working as an anesthesiologist at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland.
According to the statement of charges issued March 12, 2004, Berry also provided substandard care to several other patients, diverted controlled substances for his own use, was impaired while practicing, and misrepresented material facts on his license application. The commission’s action means that Berry will permanently surrender his license to practice medicine and surgery in Washington state and will not petition for renewal of his license in the future. Berry is licensed to practice medicine in Washington, Arizona and Louisiana; he resides in Louisiana.
The Medical Quality Assurance Commission regulates physicians and physician assistants in Washington. The program establishes, monitors, and enforces qualifications for licensing, consistent standards of practice, continuing competency mechanisms and discipline. Rules, policies and procedures promote the delivery of quality health care to state residents.
