CHILD Profile: national leader in health information, programs,
materials
OLYMPIA ¾ Washington parents have access to some of the best child health information resources in the nation. The Washington State Department of Health’s CHILD Profile program helps parents make sure their children receive the preventive health care they need. The program recently received a silver medal from the National Health Information Awards program, which recognizes the nation’s best consumer health information programs and materials.
"It’s vital that we do the best we can to protect our children’s health," said State Health Officer Dr. Maxine Hayes. "We are fortunate to have such an effective tool for parents and physicians. CHILD Profile does a great job of reminding parents about well-child checkups and providing health information that parents can use."
The program is one of five silver medal winners from among 1,100 entries in the Total Health Information Program Category. In addition, CHILD Profile’s marketing consultant, Desautel Hege Communications, won a silver medal for CHILD Profile’s provider recruitment materials.
Developed in 1993, CHILD Profile is Washington’s Health Promotion and Immunization Registry system designed to help ensure that children in our state receive needed preventive health care. The program provides parents of all children born in the state with educational health materials from birth to age six. Parents receive regular mailings with information on immunizations, growth and development, well-child checkups, nutrition and safety to help them make informed decisions about their child’s health.
CHILD Profile recently converted to a new state-of-the-art, secure Web-based immunization registry system that saves time for health care providers and ensures that children are immunized in a timely manner. Parents can call any participating health care provider to get immunization information, including a printed report of their child’s immunization status.
The National Health Information Awards program, the most comprehensive competition of its kind, is organized by the Health Information Resource Center (http://www.health.gov/nhic/), a national clearinghouse for consumer health information programs and materials.
"These awards set an industry standard of quality for consumer health materials, and this ‘seal of quality’ helps health professionals find the best consumer health information resources for their programs," said Patricia Henze, executive director of the Health Information Resource Center.
CHILD Profile will announce receipt of the National Health Information Award at two statewide anniversary conferences: at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, September 29 and at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, September 30. The conferences will celebrate 10 years of CHILD Profile keeping Washington’s children healthy and safe. Information on the conferences is available on the CHILD Profile Web site (http://www.childprofile.org/). The Web site contains more information about the program’s two primary components - the immunization registry and health promotion mailings.
CHILD Profile is a joint project of the Department of Health and the Medical Assistance Administration (http://fortress.wa.gov/dshs/maa) of the Department of Social and Health Services (contact Jim Stevenson, 360-902-7604) in cooperation with Public Health – Seattle and King County (http://www.metrokc.gov/health) (contact James Apa 206-205-5442).
