University of Washington physician agrees to permanently surrender license
OLYMPIA ¾ A physician whose license was suspended on charges of inappropriate prescribing to University of Washington athletes will permanently surrender his license. The Medical Quality Assurance Commission and the Department of Health have reached the agreement with William J. Scheyer, M.D., (MD00005835).
According to the statement of charges issued October 15, 2003, Scheyer wrote prescriptions under the name of one athlete and used the prescriptions as stocks of medication he would then distribute to several other athletes. Scheyer also allegedly failed to maintain medical records, failed to appropriately examine or evaluate some patients and provided narcotic or legend substances to other athletic trainers. The commission’s action means that Scheyer will permanently surrender his license to practice medicine and surgery in the state of Washington and will not petition for renewal of his license in the future.
The Medical Quality Assurance Commission regulates physicians and physician assistants in Washington. The program establishes, monitors, and enforces qualifications for licensing, consistent standards of practice, continuing competency mechanisms and discipline. Rules, policies and procedures promote the delivery of quality health care to state residents.
