Workshops planned in 5 locations on proposed rules for onsite septic systems
OLYMPIA ¾ The Department of Health will offer free workshops in November and December in Spokane, Ellensburg, Tumwater, Coupeville (Whidbey Island), and Everett for those who would like to learn more about proposed new septic system rules and the process for public comment. About 800,000 onsite septic systems statewide will be affected by the new rules.
The department began work on rule revisions at the direction of the State Board of Health to incorporate the most up-to-date information to protect public health from sewage. For the past two years, the agency has worked with a broad range of stakeholders, including all segments of the septic system industry, real estate developers, and local health departments to develop the proposed rules. Public comment on the rules is expected to start in January of 2005. The proposed rules (http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/ts/WW/rdc.htm) are available online.
Topics to be covered in the workshops include requirements for new systems, changes to inspection requirements for existing systems, and requirements for onsite sewage system planning by local health departments. Pre-registration is not required. The recommendations will be presented to the State Board of Health for action at a public hearing in March of 2005. For more information, call Brad Avy, Wastewater Program, 360-236-3040.
