Boil water advisory lifted for Spokane County Water District #3 customers in area of north Spokane

SPOKANE ¾ The boil water advisory issued Thursday due to the presence of E. coli bacteria in Spokane County Water District #3’s water supply has been lifted. The district is working with the state Department of Health and the Spokane Regional Health District to advise customers in the north Spokane area they no longer need to boil their drinking water. Recent samples show that chlorinating the water to provide continuous disinfection is working. The boil water advisory covered the area of district north of Francis Avenue, south of Country Home Boulevard, east of Cedar Road and west of Division.

The source of the contamination has not been found; however, the district will continue to disinfect the system while taking regular samples as part of its strategy to insure that good water quality is maintained.

Customers who have shut off or not used fixtures, water fountains, ice machines, soda machines, and/or other equipment over the past several days are reminded to flush the fixture or equipment until there is a change in water temperature before putting it back into service.

The water district has worked hard to take the steps necessary to assure its customers have water that is safe to drink again by using chlorine to disinfect the water system,” said state Drinking Water manager Denise Clifford. “We’re working with the district to look for the cause of the problem.”

The advisory was issued last Thursday (09/29/05) after E. coli bacteria was found in water samples taken for the area.  The district has inspected, flushed and is currently chlorinating the entire system. Follow-up samples show that the water is safe and reliable. There have been no reported illnesses associated with this incident.

“This event reminds us all of the importance we place on prevention, testing and quick responses when problems arise. We appreciate the cooperation and support of the district staff, the Spokane Regional Health Department staff, and neighboring water systems who helped us manage a difficult situation” said Dan Sander, Regional Engineer for the state’s Office of Drinking Water. “We are pleased that the boil water advisory can be lifted – and we will continue to monitor closing the situation. We are committed to working the District to insure that a suitable long term solution is developed.”
