Water Customers in Sprague advised to boil water
OLYMPIA ¾ The City of Sprague is advising all water customers to boil their drinking water after recent samples showed the presence of E-coli bacteria. The boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
The Washington State Department of Health is working closely with Sprague officials to find the source of the contamination. The water system will be flushed using chlorine and two sets of samples will be analyzed before notifying customers they can drink the water.
Notices about the contamination, including instructions for boiling water, are being delivered door to door today. Sprague Elementary and High Schools have been notified. Kon Lamparter, City of Sprague Certified Operator said, "We are doing all we can to eliminate the bacteria from our water system. Safe and reliable drinking water is critical to good health and responding to this kind of situation is our priority."
No illnesses related to the community’s drinking water have been reported. People who are concerned about exposure to bacteria in drinking water should consult with their health care provider. The Lincoln County Health Department is also available to answer general questions about health effects.
The boil water advisory includes several precautionary steps that customers should take. These steps include using purchased bottled water or boiled water for any water that might be consumed such as drinking, brushing teeth, dishwashing, preparing food and making ice. Water should be boiled for 3-5 minutes, and then allowed to cool before using.
The advisory will remain in effect until the City of Sprague and the state health department are confident there is no longer a threat of illness to their customers. Once satisfactory test results are reported, customers will be notified that the advisory has been lifted.
If you have any questions, please call City of Sprague at 509-257-2662. Contact the Lincoln County Health Department with questions at 509-725-1001.
