Child rape convictions lead state to suspend Spokane nurse’s license
OLYMPIA ¾ A Spokane area nurse convicted of child rape has been immediately suspended by the Department of Health and the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission. This action, called a “summary suspension,” means registered nurse Therisa Carlson (RN00129840) cannot practice or be employed as a registered nurse, pending the outcome of a hearing. The licensed practical nurse credential she previously held is also suspended.
According to the statement of charges, Carlson pleaded guilty and was convicted of rape of a child in July of 2004 after she had sexual relationships with two 12 year old boys. The Department of Health was not notified of the convictions until after Carlson had served her sentence. Carlson’s license is currently expired, and the summary suspension assures she cannot practice or work as a registered nurse at least until after a hearing. Carlson failed to report the convictions to the agency, as required.Carlson has 20 days to respond to the charges and must respond in 10 days to request a prompt hearing. The charging documents are available online by clicking the link to “Provider Credential Search” on the Department of Health home page (www.doh.wa.gov/) or by calling the customer service center, 360-236-4700. Washington residents are encouraged to use these tools to check to see if their health care provider has been disciplined and to call customer service if they believe a provider has acted unprofessionally.
The Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission protects and promotes public health, safety and welfare in Washington by regulating the competency and quality of nurses. The program establishes, monitors, and enforces qualifications for licensing, consistent standards of practice, continuing competency mechanisms and discipline. Rules, policies, and procedures developed by the commission promote the delivery of quality health care to people in Washington.
