State health officer, Dr. Maxine Hayes, elected to the Institute of Medicine

OLYMPIA ¾ Dr. Maxine Hayes, Washington State Health Officer, has been elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. The institute is the principal advisor to the federal government, health care organizations and research institutions on health policy.

Dr. Hayes is one of 65 physicians, scientists or researchers elected to the institute this year. Most institute members come from research backgrounds. Dr. Hayes is one of the few who are working in public health.

"I am honored to join the Institute of Medicine," said Dr. Hayes. "My election reflects the important role that public health plays in health policy both in this country and globally."

As the state’s top public health doctor, her role includes advising the governor and the secretary of health on issues ranging from health promotion and chronic disease prevention, to emergency response, including pandemic influenza preparedness. She also works closely with the medical community, local health departments and community groups.

"Dr. Hayes has served Washington with distinction for close to two decades," said Governor Chris Gregoire. "Her work and dedication, particularly to the needs of children, has helped improve the health of all Washingtonians. Congratulations to Dr. Hayes on this great honor."

Prior to her appointment as health officer, Dr. Hayes was the assistant secretary of Community and Family Health at the state Department of Health. She is also a clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and on the Maternal and Child Health faculty of the University of Washington School of Public Health.

"Dr. Hayes has helped to raise the profile of public health not only in Washington, but across the country," said Washington Secretary of Health Mary Selecky. "She has made many contributions to improving health in Washington as a physician, an administrator and an educator."

Dr. Hayes was appointed in 2004 to serve a four-year term on the U.S. Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

She is the recipient of many awards and honors for her work in maternal and child health, including the American Medical Association’s 2002 Dr. Nathan Davis Award and the 2003 Heroes in Health Care Lifetime Achievement Award through the Washington Health Foundation. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Editor’s note: A photograph of Dr. Hayes is available by e-mail.
