Okanogan nurse revoked from practice for abusing a patient

OLYMPIA ¾ The Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission has revoked the license of Okanogan licensed practical nurse Gary V. Reams (LP00016503) for physically abusing a patient. He may not reapply for at least 10 years.

Reams struck an 85-year-old patient in the face with a closed fist, rendering him unconscious. Reams also refused to give pain medication to another patient. In June 2006 Reams’ license was immediately restricted so he could only practice under specific conditions. He failed to renew his license, which expired in May 2006. Reams also has a license to practice as a respiratory care practitioner (LR00000830). This license is suspended and a final decision is pending.

The legal documents related to this case are available by calling 360-236-4700 or online by clicking the link to "Provider Credential Search" on the agency home page (www.doh.wa.gov/).

The Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission protects and promotes public health, safety and welfare in Washington by regulating the competency and quality of nurses. The program establishes, monitors and enforces qualifications for licensing, consistent standards of practice, continuing competency mechanisms and discipline. Rules, policies, and procedures developed by the commission promote the delivery of quality health care to people in Washington.
