Water customers in Montesano advised to boil water

OLYMPIA ¾ The City of Montesano is advising its water customers to boil their drinking water after recent samples showed the presence of E. coli bacteria. The boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

The Washington State Department of Health is working closely with Montesano officials to find the source of the contamination. Notices about the contamination, along with instructions for boiling water, are being delivered to all water customers door-to-door today and tomorrow. Grays Harbor County Public Services is notifying food establishments, and area schools have been advised of the situation.

"Protecting public health is our highest priority," said Dick Stone, Mayor of the City of Montesano. "We are doing all we can to eliminate the bacteria from our water system and restore safe and reliable drinking water to our customers."

No illnesses related to the community’s drinking water have been reported. People who are concerned about exposure to bacteria in drinking water should consult with a health care provider. Grays Harbor County Public Services is available to answer general questions about health effects of bacteria.

The boil water advisory includes several precautionary steps that customers should take. These steps include using boiled water or purchased bottled water for any water that might be consumed, such as drinking, brushing teeth, dishwashing, preparing food and making ice. Water should be boiled for 3-5 minutes, and then allowed to cool before using.

The advisory will remain in effect until the City of Montesano and the state Department of Health are confident there is no longer a threat of illness to the city’s customers. Once satisfactory test results are reported, customers will be notified that the advisory has been lifted.

If you have any questions, please call the City of Montesano at 360-249-3021 or Grays Harbor County Public Services at 360-249-4413.
