Water customers in Tieton advised to boil water
OLYMPIA ¾ The City of Tieton is advising its water customers to boil their drinking water once water service is restored. Multiple water line breaks caused a system-wide water outage early yesterday morning. Boiling the water for three to five minutes will destroy any bacteria that may have gotten into the lines. The boil water advisory will remain in effect until the lines are repaired and water samples show no signs of contamination.
The state Department of Health is closely monitoring the situation and providing the city with needed technical assistance and support. The City of Tieton is supplying water to customers and local businesses with support from the Red Cross. "We are pleased to see the level of response to this incident and the city’s efforts to protect the public’s health," said Mike Wilson, regional engineer with the Office of Drinking Water for the State Department of Health. "We applaud the coordination between the city, emergency management and the Red Cross."
Yakima Health District is notifying food establishments and the Tieton Intermediate School. "Protecting public health is our highest priority," said Norma Joiner, Mayor of the City of Tieton. "We are doing all we can to restore service as quickly as possible."
The boil water advisory includes several precautionary steps that customers should take. These steps include using boiled water or purchased bottled water for any water that might be consumed, such as drinking, brushing teeth, dishwashing, preparing food and making ice. Water should be boiled for three to five minutes and then allowed to cool before using.
The advisory will remain in effect until the City of Tieton and the state Department of Health are confident there is no longer a threat of illness to the city’s customers. Once satisfactory test results are reported, customers will be notified that the advisory has been lifted.
If you have any questions, please call the City of Tieton at 509-673-3162.
