Boil water advisory lifted for Island Utility customers

Olympia ¾ The boil water advisory issued Sunday for the Island Utility Water System on the south end of Bainbridge Island has been lifted by Washington State Department of Health. The advisory covered about 1,200 customers and included two schools — Blakely Elementary and IslandWood.

The advisory was issued after routine water samples showed the presence of E. coli bacteria. Operators subsequently flushed and increased disinfectant levels in the water system. Two sets of water quality tests confirm that water in the system is now free from bacterial contamination and is safe to drink.

"Our priority is protecting our customers’ health," said Island Utility Water System operator Scott Shelton. "We’re pleased that the steps we took to eliminate the bacteria from our system were successful. We appreciate our customers’ cooperation and understanding during this difficult time."
