Air emissions review shows need for additional monitoring at Port Townsend
mill
OLYMPIA ¾ The state Department of Health recommends additional monitoring of air emissions at the Port Townsend Paper Company mill. While the agency’s health consultation concludes it does not appear that emissions from the plant are linked to any chronic diseases among area residents, more data is needed to better understand the risks.
The health consultation is a review of available emission data and Jefferson County Health data. One of the important findings is that not enough data has been gathered for a clear picture of potential health risks. State health officials recommend more research on air emissions from the mill to learn where "hot spots" might be found and, if possible, to try to find the best locations for ongoing air monitoring. This additional information would help identify chemicals of concern and consider whether or not they pose a public health hazard to residents of Port Townsend.
State health is coordinating with the Department of Ecology to identify chemicals of concern that could impact neighborhoods surrounding the plant. Recommendations include collecting data to identify what, how, and where chemicals are being emitted. The state agencies are working closely with the community, local officials, mill managers, and the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry to address community concerns about possible health effects from mill emissions.
Residents of Port Townsend can obtain a copy of the Environmental Health Assessments report (www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/oehas/whatsnew.htm) or at Port Townsend Public Library and Jefferson County Public Health offices. Comments will be accepted through May 8, 2008. The state Department of Health will respond to questions and comments submitted during the public comment period. A copy of the questions and the agency responses will be attached in the final health consultation report.
