Public input sought on Women, Infants, and Children service plan

OLYMPIA ¾ WIC, the nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children, wants to hear from people who have opinions and suggestions about the services WIC provides.

"As we refine the program plan for next year, we invite comments on WIC services and processes," said Janet Jackson Charles, State WIC Nutrition Program Director. "I encourage people who want to comment to look at the current program goals and objectives, and nutrition services plan on our Web site."

Each year Washington WIC provides $111 million worth of nutritious foods to more than 277,000 women and children, including 10,000 women in the military or who are dependents of military personnel. Almost half of all babies born in this state receive benefits from the program.

To make it easier for families to make healthy choices, a broad range of services are available, including healthy foods and nutrition education, as well as help getting medical services like immunizations and family planning. Promoting and supporting breastfeeding is another important priority.

"We get some of our best ideas for improving services from families that participate in WIC and local agency staff working directly with families around the state," Charles said.

Comments about the program can be sent by e-mail (stateplan@doh.wa.gov) or mailed to WIC Director, Washington State WIC Nutrition Program, P.O. Box 47886 Olympia, WA, 98504-7886. They may also be faxed to 360-236-2345. To reach WIC by phone, call 1-800-841-1410 and press 0 for the operator.

All comments must be received by May 16 to be considered in the 2009 planning process. The WIC program Web site (http://www.doh.wa.gov/cfh/WIC/contact.htm) has information online. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.
