Northwestern Kitsap community urged to boil water

OLYMPIA ¾ Residents served by the West Kitsap Water System are encouraged to boil their tap water because E. coli bacteria have been found in the water.

The health advisory affects more than 616 homes in the Lake Symington area about 12 miles northwest of Bremerton. The area affected is bounded by Holly Road around Lake Symington to the south, Larson and Glory Lanes to the north, Big Beef Crossing Road to the east, and Coho Run Road to the west.

The West Kitsap Water System includes Frog Pond and Bridletree Water Systems. Nearby Green Mountain Elementary has its own water supply and isn’t affected by the advisory.

Customers in this area should boil their tap water for at least one minute or use bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, preparing food, washing dishes, and making ice.

E. coli bacteria were detected in the water during routine monthly water testing. While most forms of these bacteria are not harmful, they indicate contamination is entering the water system. Water system employees are inspecting the wells, the reservoir, the distribution system, and storage tanks. They will disinfect the entire system with chlorine. The advisory will be in effect until tests show the water is safe to drink.

“The health of our customers is our top priority,” said Daniel Kimbler, water operations superintendent. “We’re working to identify the source of the problem and fix it.”

Customers who have questions can call the water system at 360-779-7656.
