Water system owner in Kitsap County fined by state agency

OLYMPIA ¾ The South Keyport Heights water system has been fined $10,920 by the state Department of Health for not complying with an order to improve the safety of the water system.

The small water system serves 41 homes in the Poulsbo area.

On July 1, 2008 the agency issued an order to system owner Juel Lange. The order had six requirements, including operating and maintaining disinfection equipment, using federally approved methods to sample water quality, and hiring a certified water system operator.

Over the years, the Department of Health has sent dozens of letters, reminders, guidance, and offers of assistance to Lange. Since 2002 he’s had 15 water quality and monitoring violations.

“It’s vital that drinking water systems are properly operated,” said Denise Clifford, director of the agency’s Office of Drinking Water. “These basic requirements are essential to ensure the water Mr. Lange provides his customers is safe to drink.”

Lange has until Jan. 20, 2009, to pay the fine or request a hearing.
