Quick facts about tobacco use in Washington State

  • Adult  tobacco users – 770,000 (Current tobacco use rates in Washington State; Tobacco use by county )

  • Youth tobacco users – 70,000

  • Sixth graders who smoke – 1 percent

  • Eighth graders who smoke – 7 percent

  • Tenth graders who smoke – 14 percent

  • Twelfth graders who smoke – 20 percent

  • Tobacco-related diseases kill about 7,500 Washington residents every year.

  • Tobacco use causes 90 percent of lung cancer deaths, 45 percent of heart disease deaths in people younger than 65, 33 percent of all cancer deaths, 18 percent of stroke deaths, and 10 percent of newborn deaths.

  • Secondhand smoke exposure is associated with 150,000-300,000 cases of bronchitis and pneumonia in children under 18 months.

  • Tobacco-related medical costs in Washington exceed $1.5 billion annually.

  • The tobacco industry spends more than $160 million annually in Washington promoting its products and generating new smokers.
