Tobacco Quitline Services

New CDC Report

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) created a list of tobacco control and prevention highlights for each state. This document shows current smoking prevalence and policies that impact tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke in our state. Read the highlights document (PDF).

Calling the Quitline

1-800-QUIT-NOW is a free service to help you or someone you care about quit using tobacco. Different people need different resources as they try to quit. The quitline can support both your immediate and long-term needs. Our coaches can talk to you about overcoming common barriers, like dealing with stress, cravings, irritability, and weight gain. The quitline is available in both English and Spanish with translation and TTY services. It is open 7 days a week. 24 hours a day except the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

What You Can Expect

When you call 1-800-QUIT-NOW you will get immediate assistance which can include:

  • A support team of quit coaches who can help you create a quit plan that works for you.
  • Research-based information about a wide range of topics related to smoking and quitting.
  • A step-by-step quit smoking guide
  • A supply of free nicotine gum or patches.

Do You Qualify?

Anyone who lives in Washington State is eligible for at least one call.

Washington State has funding to make the quitline available to people without insurance for one year thanks to the Legislature and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since launching in 2001, this service has helped more than 160,000 Washington residents.

You qualify for additional calls and may qualify for gum or patches if you:

  • Are 18 or older and live in Washington state.
  • Are uninsured.
  • Are underinsured–have an insurance plan that does not cover cessation benefits.
  • Are pregnant.
  • Are on Medicaid.
  • Are on a Medicare program that does not offer cessation benefits.
  • Are eligible for health care services provided by Indian Health Services.
  • Have a referral from the Veteran’s Administration.
  • Have an insurance plan which covers the quit line tobacco cessation program.

  • You must quit or be prepared to quit within 30 days.
  • You must be age 18 or over to receive materials or calls back from a Quit Coach.
Underinsured (Have Insurance, But No Benefit for Cessation)

One-Call Programs

  • You can call the quitline directly for counseling anytime.
  • You may be eligible for additional services through your employer, a community resource, your health plan, or if you fall into one of the other categories listed on the left.
  • Self-help materials
  • These services are offered regardless of your insurance status.
  • You may call the quitline multiple times.
  • You must be age 18 or over to receive materials or calls back from a Quit Coach.
Pregnant

Multiple-Call Program

  • You can call the quitline directly for counseling anytime.
  • You can receive up to nine follow-up calls from your Quit Coach
  • Self-help materials
  • Four weeks of nicotine gum or patches free if appropriate
  • These services are offered regardless of your insurance status.
  • Enrollment is limited to once per year, but you may call the quit line whenever you need.
  • You must be age 18 or over to receive materials or calls back from a Quit Coach.
Pregnant and Have Washington State Medicaid Fee for Service (FFS)

Multiple-Call Program

  • You can call the quitline directly for counseling anytime.
  • You can receive up to nine follow-up calls from your Quit Coach
  • Self-help materials
  • 12 weeks of nicotine gum or patches free if appropriate
  • You must be age 18 or over to receive materials or calls back from a Quit Coach.
Under the Age of 18

Multiple-Call Program

  • You can call the quit line directly for counseling anytime.
  • Due to Washington State privacy laws, we are not able to mail materials to you if you are under the age of 18
  • You may call the quitline multiple times.
Washington State Medicaid FFS

Multiple-Call Program

  • You can call the quitline directly for counseling anytime.
  • You can receive four follow-up calls from your Quit Coach.
  • Self-help materials
  • Four weeks of nicotine gum or patches free if appropriate OR 12 weeks of Buproprion or Varenicline (with a prescription from physician and if indicated as medically appropriate).
  • Coverage will vary based on your Medicaid FFS benefits.
  • WA State Medicaid FFS requires enrollment in phone coaching to receive medications.
  • You must be 18 or over to receive materials or calls back from a Quit Coach.
  • To receive medications, you must quit or be prepared to quit within 30 days.
WA State Medicaid

Multiple-Call Program

  • You can call the quitline directly for counseling anytime.
  • You can receive four follow-up calls from your Quit Coach. 
  • Self-help materials
  • Nicotine gum, patches or prescriptions. Buproprion/Varenicline may or may not be covered. Check your Managed Care Plan benefits.
  • Coverage will vary based on your Medicaid Care Coverage Plan.
  • Most Medicaid Managed Care plans require enrollment in phone coaching to received medications.
  • Benefits vary between Medicaid Managed Care plans (Molina, Community Health Plan, Regence, Columbia United Providers, etc.)
  • You must be 18 or over to receive materials or calls back from a Quit Coach.
  • To receive medications, you must quit or be prepared to quit within 30 days.
A Referral from Indian Health Services or the Veteran's Administration

Multiple-Call Program

  • You can call the quitline directly for counseling anytime.
  • You can receive four follow-up calls from your Quit Coach.
  • Self-help materials
  • Four weeks of nicotine gum or patches free if appropriate
  • You must quit or be prepared to quit within 30 days.
