The Washington Breast and Cervical Health Program provides uninsured and underinsured women ages 40 to 64 with breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic services.

Comprehensive Cancer Control Program
Comprehensive Cancer Control is an integrated and coordinated approach to reducing cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality through prevention, early detection, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliation. This approach encourages healthy lifestyles, promote recommended cancer screening guidelines and tests, increase access to quality cancer care, and improve the quality of life for cancer survivors through enhanced survivorship. 

The Washington State Department of Health is working with a statewide partnership to implement Washington’s Comprehensive Cancer Control State Plan.

Washington State Cancer Registry
Cancer a reportable condition in Washington and mandated the Department of Health to establish a statewide cancer registry program to accurately monitor the incidence of cancer in the state of Washington for the purposes of understanding, controlling, and reducing the occurrence of cancer in this state." This program is designed to standardize data collection and provide information for cancer prevention and control programs at the local, state and national levels.

Chronic Disease Prevention Unit
Chronic diseases – such as asthma, cancer, diabetes and heart disease – are now the leading cause of illness disability and death. The leading causes of chronic diseases are smoking and obesity. These programs work with partners statewide to prevent and control chronic diseases.

The Diabetes Prevention and Control Program provides leadership for diabetes prevention and control strategies through the state Diabetes Network, regional coalitions and the Washington State Collaborative to Improve Health.

Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program
The goal of the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program is to build statewide support to help people with established heart disease or stroke, along with those at risk for developing diseases.

Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention Program
The Nutrition Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention Program works with state leaders, communities, worksites, schools, and families to ensure that all WA residents have ready access to healthy foods and physical activity where we live, learn, work, and play. This CDC-funded program produces and promotes Washington's Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan.

Washington State Collaborative to Improve Health
The Washington State Collaborative trains health care providers to implement the Chronic Care Model and deliver population-based care following best practices.

Basic Food Nutrition Education Program
The Basic Food Nutrition Education Program is a nutrition education program for people who receive, or are eligible to receive, Basic Food Program benefits. The program helps people choose healthy foods and active lifestyles.

Asthma Program
The Asthma Program works to control asthma symptoms by helping people with the disease learn how to manage their asthma, reducing exposure to asthma triggers in the environment, and improving healthcare for people with asthma. The program builds local and state infrastructure to support these objectives.

Tobacco Prevention and Control Program
The Tobacco Prevention and Control Program uses comprehensive, proven, and cost-effective strategies to reduce tobacco use rates and prevent kids from starting.  Program goals are to: 

  • Increase quitting among tobacco users.
  • Prevent youth from beginning to use tobacco.
  • Eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Identify and eliminate tobacco-related disparities.

The program supports statewide activities such as the Washington Tobacco Quit Line and media campaigns, and services directly provided by county health departments, community organizations, schools, and tribes.  The Tobacco Program’s comprehensive approach includes:

  • Community and tribal programs
  • School programs
  • Cessation programs
  • Public awareness and education
  • Policy and enforcement
  • Assessment and evaluation

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program
The mission of the Washington State WIC Nutrition Program is to improve the lifelong health and nutrition of women, infants, and young children in Washington State.  This program is designed to help pregnant women, new mothers, and young children eat well, learn about nutrition, and stay healthy.   Women, infants, and children who qualify (according to income and nutrition risk guidelines) are provided nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding education and support, nutritious foods, and assistance with access to health care.  WIC promotes healthy habits early, when they make the most powerful difference in the lifelong health of a child.  Almost 50% of all infants born in Washington are served by WIC.
