Chronic Disease Prevention Unit

The mission of the Chronic Disease Prevention Unit is to prevent and manage chronic disease in Washington State, through leadership, collaboration and systems change.  Chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and stroke are among the leading causes of illness, disability and death and make up a large percentage of the nation's medical care costs.  It is our priority to first prevent disease from occurring, and if it is diagnosed to prevent the complications from developing.  The way we do this work is through promoting healthy nutrition, physical activity, and building healthy communities.

  • Community and tribal programs.

  • School programs.

  • Cessation programs.

  • Public awareness and education.

  • Policy and enforcement.

  • Assessment and evaluation.

Unit Director: Terry Reid, 360-236-3665

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Unit

The mission of the Washington State WIC Nutrition Program is to improve the lifelong health and nutrition of women, infants, and young children in Washington State.  This program is designed to help pregnant women, new mothers, and young children eat well, learn about nutrition, and stay healthy. Women, infants, and children who qualify (according to income and nutrition risk guidelines) are provided nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding education and support, nutritious foods, and assistance with access to health care. WIC promotes healthy habits early, when they make the most powerful difference in the lifelong health of a child. Almost 50 percent of all infants born in Washington are served by WIC.

Unit Director: Janet Charles, 360-236-3697
