Are You Entering a Health Care Profession?

If you work as a health care professional or in a state licensed or certified health care facility in Washington, you must have AIDS training. In order to get a license, certification or registration to practice a regulated health care profession in Washington state, you are required to have AIDS education (RCW 70.24.270 and WAC 246-12-260, WAC 246-12-270).

You can look up your AIDS education requirement by going directly to your application for your profession on the Professions & Facilites Licensed, Certified or Registered listing. Find the AIDS Education and Training Attestation section. This describes your AIDS education requirements specific to your selected profession including how many hours are required.

You can also find your application and additional information by doing the following steps:

1. Go to Washington Department of Health Professions & Facilities Licensed, Certified or Registered list.

2. Find your profession you want information about and click on the link.

3. Look to the right of the page to find the Profession Links box. You will find an Applications/Forms link in this box. If you do not find the box at the right of the page, it means that page is still under construction. In that case, you will find your application at the far left of the page in the directory.

4. Select your application, and look thrsough it to find the AIDS Education and Training Attestation section. This describes your AIDS education requirements specific to your selected profession including how many hours are required.

5. You can also contact staff from the Office of Customer Service web page for more information.

When you submit your paperwork to the licensing agency for your particular profession, you will sign a declaration that you have completed this education. It is important to keep records of your HIV/AIDS training support your statement (WAC 246-12-280).

The training is a one time requirement, and must include:

What are HIV and AIDS.
What causes them and how HIV goes from person to person.
How to counsel for HIV testing.
How to be safe in the workplace.
Signs and symptoms of HIV and AIDS.
Legal and moral issues.
Confidentiality and emotional and social issues.

Employees of State Licensed or Certified Health Care Facilities

HIV/AIDS education on prevention, transmission and treatment is required (RCW 70.24.310) for employees of state licensed or certified health care facilities (WAC 247-04-020.). There is no specific hourly requirement to cover these topics. In general, it should take about 2 hours of education to cover these topics adequately. The courses listed below can help you meet this requirement.
