The Assessment Unit (AU) provides the Family Planning and Reproductive Health (FPRH) Program with data analysis and epidemiological support as well as other technical assistance. FPRH distributes Title X and State funds to family planning agencies and Planned Parenthood facilities across the state. These agencies submit data on family planning clients to the Region X Title X Family Planning Data System. The regional data are managed by Ahlers & Associates in Waco Texas. The AU archives the raw data for all Washington agencies and provides the information back to FPRH in the form of ad hoc queries, grant writing assistance, and fact sheets. In addition, the AU works with regional and state groups to make data processing and quality improvements to the Region X Title X Family Planning Data System. A complete evaluation of this system, the Region X Title X Family Planning Data System Evaluation: A Washington State Perspective, (PDF, 4323 KB) was completed in 1999. The AU also analyzes other family planning data sources such as PRAMS, Medicaid, and vital statistics. In 1997, the AU added a family planning module to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). It has provided baseline data on the use of contraceptives, reasons for non-use, and access to family planning services. Information gathered through this module has been used to guide state policy and program planning for universal access to birth control services and unintended pregnancy prevention initiatives. |
