Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes genital HPV infection. It spreads by sexual contact. Most people who become infected with HPV will not have any symptoms and the infection will clear up on its own. Some types of HPV can lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, or penis. HPV can also cause genital warts.
