Rotavirus

Rotavirus is found in the stool of infected persons. It is easily spread when a person puts something (food, water, hands, or an object) into his or her mouth that has the virus on or in it.

Symptoms are:

• High fever.
• Vomiting.
• Severe diarrhea.

These symptoms can cause a child to lose body fluids and become dehydrated, which can lead to hospitalization.

Each year in the U.S., rotavirus is responsible for:

• More than 400,000 doctor visits.
• More than 200,000 emergency room visits.
• 55,000 to 70,000 hospitalizations.
• 20-60 deaths.

Almost all children in the U.S. are infected with rotavirus before their fifth birthday.
