Other Healthy Communities Projects

Puyallup
The Tacoma Pierce County Health Department is working with the city of Puyallup to create a community where residents can be physically active and have healthy food choices in schools and local restaurants.

Some examples of how they will create a healthy community:

  • Work with the South Hill community to make sure physical activity is part of a proposed redevelopment plan
  • Include walking and bicycling options in transportation plans
  • Promote physical activity opportunities that are free or low cost in schools and the community
  • Work with local restaurants and schools to offer healthy food choices

This work is accomplished through partnerships with city and transportation planners, school administrators, city residents, neighborhood associations, and health-care providers.

Spokane
Spokane City Council District 1 is home to a large Slavic community and an active neighborhood council. The neighborhood council, joined by District 1 Council Members, business leaders, neighborhood associations and the Spokane Regional Health District developed a plan to make it easier for residents to be physically active and choose healthy foods.

They adopted several strategies:

  • Improve the community to make it easier for people to walk to school and around the neighborhood
  • Provide opportunities for disabled children to be physically active by building a specialized play area in Mission Park
  • Create new community gardens to make fresh produce available to residents and community food banks

Kittitas County
The residents of Kittitas Valley are working hard to create a community where they can live an active and healthy lifestyle. ShapeUp Kittitas Coalition under the leadership of the Kittitas County Public Health Department continues to:

  • Educate elected officials about the importance of developing land-use policies that promote healthier foods and physical activity environments

  • Recommend revisions to city comprehensive plans to include physical activity

  • Work with the Ellensburg School District to implement new nutrition and physical activity policies and after-school programs

  • Use local print and radio media to highlight physical activity and healthy eating opportunities

  • Help child-care centers incorporate good nutrition and physical activity opportunities in their programs
