The Mount Vernon Healthy Communities Project began in January 2004. After completing a community assessment, an advisory committee of community leaders, policy makers, and community members developed an action plan. The priorities described in thie plan reflect the priorities in the Washington State Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan.

  1. Ensure schools provide healthful food and beverages
  2. Utilize urban planning approaches-zoning and land use-that promote physical activity
  3. Encourage policies that provide children with opportunities for physical activiy outside of formal physical education classes
