Welcome to the Healthy Aging
pages of the Washington State Department of Health. Here you will find information on some of the most important things you can do to stay healthy, active and independent through the years.

There are many negative stereotypes about growing older — it’s no fun, everything hurts, you have to stop doing the things you like to do, you lose your teeth... These things are not inevitable! In fact, many age-related diseases and conditions are completely preventable, or can be delayed or symptoms reduced by making a habit of doing the things recommended here.

If you are currently healthy and active — keep going! The information here may help you stay that way as you age. If you already have a health condition, the information here can still help you. No matter how old you are, how long you’ve been physically inactive, smoked, or eaten foods that are not good for you, it is never too late to begin taking care of yourself — your body and your mind.

The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” These pages aim to help you, your family members and friends to stay physically, mentally and socially active and healthy, regardless of age.
